Knight and Day came out in the middle of the Summer season amongst some huge franchise films and this was going to have to hold its own on the weight of the lead stars, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The film seemed to look too glossy for everyones liking, but it's actually not that bad.
Tom Cruise plays a secret agent who is on the run from his bosses, he bumps into Cameron Diaz and she becomes embroiled in his cross-country race from the FBI.
The sheen of the film can make it easy to overlook and easy to write it off on first instance, but Knight and Day doesn't pretend to be anything other than a fun action film and Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise are effortlessly likeable too. It's really what the summer is meant to be about, but all too often, the summer season is taken up by brooding and overly serious films when more often than not, they don't need to be.
Knight and Day is likely not to get anywhere close to anyones top films of the year, and won't get very close to anyones top films at all. However, if you're in the need of mindless fun, you need go no further than Knight and Day. Especially right now around Christmas time.
It's mainly with the likeability that this film really stands at an advantage, although Tom Cruise isn't everyone's cup of tea, he's a safe choice for this kind of film, he knows what he's good at and he's good at your standard action fare. Cameron Diaz is effortlessly likeable in everything she's in, she's a fun blonde and she sticks with that, and it works.
Competing against films like Inception in the summer weren't going to make it work well, but on DVD, this might have a lucky resurgence. Having said that, you are either going to like or hate this film. If you like this sort of thing, it's right up your street, but if you have an undying hate for Tom Cruise, for colourful action and for glossy sheen, you're going to be in hell.
Knight and Day is out now on DVD.
