Delving into the world of teenage depression, anxiety, stress and romance It’s Kind of a Funny Story creates a lighter twist on some very real life problems, reassuring all of us that being a little crazy in this world isn’t so bad!
Adapted from Ned Vizzini’s 2006 novel, and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (both directed Sugar & Half Nelson), this film follows the teenage dramas and emotions of 16 year old Craig (Kier Gilchrist) as he checks himself into Brooklyn’s 3 North, an adult psychiatric ward, suffering from the pressures of adolescent life.
A workaholic father, looming college application, love and personal shortcomings in the shadow of his awesome best friend Aaron (Thomas Mann - Inspector Mom) all contribute to Craig’s decision to section himself for the night.
When the hospital’s minimum stay of five days is revealed, Craig isn’t so sure of his decision... but by then it’s too late!
Trapped in the ward for the next five days, Craig is immediately befriended by Bobby (Zach Galifianakis), another psychiatric patient claiming to be on vacation. Bobby takes Craig under his wing, and their unlikely bond develops into a relationship based on mutual help and advice.
To add more confusion to Craig’s life, his love interest progresses from his best friend’s girlfriend Nia (Zoe Kravitz - Twelve) to fellow patient Noell (Emma Roberts). This prompts Bobby to become the catalyst for this teenage romance, helping Craig to finally pluck up the courage to ask Noell out.
It’s Kind of a Funny Story is a warm, charming and smart coming-of-age story which delves into the world of teenage depression and neurosis- but above all is about close friendships and young love.
