Acclaimed photojournalist Danfung Dennis takes us on a journey to the frontline and back in his award-winning documentary feature debut Hell and back again.
Embedded with an American Marine Company in Afghanistan, Dennis captures a brutally personal depiction of combat life through the eyes of 25-year old Marine Sergeant Nathan Harris.
Hell And Back Again cuts back and forth between the Marines battling the Taliban in southern Afghanistan and Nathan Harris in recovery at home after he is severely injured by a bullet through the hip.
Distressed and in immense physical pain we follow Nathan as he attempts to reconcile the addictive nature of wartime violence with the terrifying normalcy of home.
Hell And Back Again is a cinematically revolutionary film that lays bare the true cost of war with unprecedented intimacy.
Director Danfung Dennis shot the film entirely on his Digital SLR Camera using a customized camera rig in order to capture the immediacy of the frontline. The DVD will contain a bonus feature where the director takes us through how he shot Hell And Back Again.
Hell And Back Again celebrated its world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, where it won both the World Cinema Grand Jury and Cinematography Awards.
The film was also selected to screen at prestigious festivals including Sheffield Doc/Fest, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Hot Docs Toronto, AFI/Silverdocs Festival and the Moscow International Film Festival.
During its successful theatrical run in both the UK and the US, critics lauded the film with praise calling it 'A tour de force that breaks new ground' (The New York Times) and the first film 'since The Hurt Locker that so effectively explored the difficulties of trying to smooth the jagged edges of combat training back into normal life' (The Times). Hell And Back Again hasalso been shortlisted for an Oscar at the 2012 Academy Awards and nominated for Best Documentary at this year’s British Independent Film Awards.
Hell And Back Again will be released on DVD (£15.99) by Independent Distribution on 23 January 2012.
