Returning to his hometown in the Midwest for a family celebration, romantic novelist Michael Taylor (Ryan Reynolds), is filled with dread and trepidation at the impending reunion.
Troubled by the realities of his adult life, a struggling marriage and none too brilliant career, coupled with thoughts of years of conflict with his demanding father (Willem Dafoe), leave him concerned about the visit. The only redeeming thought is seeing his Aunt Jane (Emily Watson) an ally from his youth.
But when he arrives at the family home, Michael is faced with an unimaginable scenario. Arriving with younger sister Ryne (Shannon Lucio) after an awkward journey from the airport, they are confronted with a devastating scene, a car accident that has taken the life of their mother, Lisa (Julia Roberts) in the prime of her life.
A funeral replaces the planned celebrations, and as Michael mourns his mother, he must come to terms with his fractured relationship with his father.
Despite her absence, Michael learns more about his mother, forges closer relationships with his wife, sister and aunt, and in the process, gains a greater understanding of what it means to love as an adult.
Fireflies in the Garden is released 28th September.
