Ok so Dead Snow may not start out as the most riveting horror movie that you will ever see but I urge fans of the genre to stick with it as it turns into a tongue in cheek gore fest that is one of the best horror flicks of the year.

Loaded with skis and beer, eight excited medical students eagerly set off to a remote cabin in the snow topped Norwegian Mountains for some snow sports and drunken fun during their Easter break.

Expecting drinking, sledding and flirtation, the mood suddenly changes as a local hiker wraps on their cabin door revealing that they have come to the wrong resort as deep in the hills lay an unthinkable evil.

The area that they are holidaying in was used by the Nazis during the German occupation of Norway in World War II.

For three years the Nazis murdered, raped and pillaged until a vengeful uprising by a merciless mob drove them out of Oksford and into the nearby mountains where they allegedly froze to death, never to be heard of again.

Spooked by their strange visitor the students discover a box of Nazi gold in the cabin which raises the zombie Nazis who return to reclaim their treasure.

I do suppose that there is a sense of déjà vu when you watch zombie movies such as this, I suppose that there a re only so many ways to tell this particular story, but it really is a fun watch that gives a little nod back to Sam Raimi’s Evil dead movies.

And while the action is a bit slow to get going once we finally clap our eyes on the Nazi zombies the onslaught comes pretty fast and is absolutely relentless.

The group are picked off one by one and die in, some cases, the most outrageous ways possible which is part of the fun.

Filmmaker Wirkola mixes, with great success, humour and horror and never loses sight of what this film is… it’s an all out splatter fest with the Nazi zombie’s as its stars.

So with gouged out eyes and sawn off limbs Dead Snow does everything you expect of a zombie movie, it’s fun, it’s jumpy as well as being totally gross so sit back and enjoy the ride.

Dead Snow is out on DVD now.
