Ryan Reynolds may be starring in Green Lantern next year but the actor has taken a break from being an action hero to take on the small budget movie Buried.
Now I don't know about you but a ninety minute movie of watching Reynolds trapped in a coffin may not sound like riveting stuff... but you would be wrong as Reynolds turns in a career defining performance as Buried proves to be one of the movies of the year.
When Paul wakes up in a coffin with no idea of who put him there or why, life for the truck driver and family man instantly becomes a hellish struggle for survival.
Buried with only a cell phone and a lighter, his contact with the outside world and ability to piece together clues that could help him discover his location are maddeningly limited.
Poor reception, a rapidly draining battery, and a dwindling oxygen supply become his worst enemies in a tightly confined race against time- fighting panic, despair and delirium, Paul has only 90 minutes to be rescued before his worst nightmare comes true.
If you haven't checked out this movie yet then you should really give it a go as Reynolds commands your attention from the opening seconds as he battles to stay alive.
It was a bold move by director Cortes to have only Reynolds on the screen for the full ninety four minutes but it's a tour de force performance from the actor.
And while I am singing Reynolds' performance a slap on the back also has to go to Cortes who has produced an adventurous and creative movie that never seems restricted by it's obvious limitations.
This movie is a thrilling watch that makes you believe that you are buried along with Reynolds, I really would not recommend this to claustrophobic, and is a movie that you will remember after the credits roll.
Buried is an extremely well crafted and beautifully shot movie that is, despite it's confines, a very effective thriller that has you on the edge of your seat from the word go.
And hats off to Cortes who produces a pulsating and harrowing ending - it's great to see him not cop out!
It's fair to say that sometimes the simplest ideas are the best as this is an incredibly tense watch.
