Bride Wars DVD

Cast: Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Kristen Johnson, Bryan Greenberg
Dir: Gary Winick
Rating: 2/5

Bare in mind that both Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway are known for their light comedy roles, what with the likes of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and The Devil Wears Prada, and are both Oscar nominated you really have to wonder why Bride Wars appealed to both of them.

Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) are best friends who since childhood have planned every detail of their respective weddings. At the top of their bridal "must have" list: a ceremony at New York's ultimate bridal destination, the Plaza Hotel.

Now, at age 26, they're both about to get married; they're about to realise their dreams; and they're about to live happily ever after.

Or maybe not...

When a clerical error causes a clash in wedding dates - they're now to be married on the same date! - Liv, Emma and their lifelong friendship are put to the ultimate test. Liv, a successful lawyer who is used to getting what she wants, including the perfect job and the perfect man, won't settle for anything less than the perfect wedding she has dreamed of for years.

Emma, a schoolteacher who has always been good at taking care of others, but not so much in looking after herself, discovers her inner Bridezilla and comes out swinging when her own dream wedding is imperilled.

Right if I had paid to see this at the cinema I would have felt robbed but seeing as I watched this DVD free of charge I only felt slightly aggrieved that it's ninety minutes of my life that I will never get.

While there is nothing horrifically bad with this movie it just has that feel of seen this all before as well as Hudson pulling out a rather familiar performance, it's actually getting quite boring.

I like the fact that this film was not afraid to make this seemingly unbreakable friendship the central relationship, despite it being a movie about getting married the men in Liv and Kate's lives take a major backseat.

But it's hard to warm to these two very superficial characters in a totally ludicrous story that really begins to drag when it hits the hour mark.

And, as you can imagine, the pair see the error of their ways a little too quickly they both repent and all is hunky-dory, a plot line that is getting tiresome in the chick flick.

Unfortunately what could have been a hilarious movie about mishaps leading up to the biggest day of a girl's life is really lacking in laughs, you will struggle to find one, and getting the alter is a painful slog.

Surprisingly there are no memorable moments from Hathaway or Hudson who seem to just be going through the motions, if you want to see Hathaway put in a good performance watch Rachel Getting Married and Hudson at her best there's How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days and Almost Famous.

And while it is a chick flick that isn't meant to be taken seriously there really is little to like here which is a major disappointment.

Bride Wars is released on DVD 18th May
