Style icon Jane Birkin makes her directorial debut with the haunting ghost story Boxes as well as playing the lead role of Anna, a woman who is troubled by ghosts from her past.
Along with Birkin’s superb performance, the film has a wonderful supporting cast including the magnificent Michel Piccoli (Le Grande Bouffe, Belle de Jour) as Anna’s father and the talented John Hurt (44 Inch Chest, Alien) as her exhusband and father of one of her daughters.
Anna has just moved into her beautiful seaside house in Brittany, everywhere is still cluttered with boxes, filled with mementos and memories of her family.
As Anna goes through the boxes, her father three daughters and her headstrong mother appear in the form of ghosts and start tormenting her. Life has not been easy and to Anna these ghosts are quite real.
All those who counted on her, dead or undead, seem to have moved in with her and assail her with reproaches, regrets and accusations especially her parents.
The remarkable and moving Boxes focuses on a variety of emotions such as love, death, devotion, betrayal and regret and will be released for the first time ever on DVD on 4 October 2010 courtesy of Bluebell Films.
Boxes closely echoes the life of Birkin who like Anna has lived many lives, has been married three times and has three daughters Kate Barry with six-time Oscar winner John Barry, Charlotte Gainsbourg with the late Serge Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon with the award-winning Jacques Doillon.
Haunting, thoughtful, and at times astounding, Boxes is a ghost story like no other.
