Successful and single businesswoman Kate Holbrook has long put her career ahead of a personal life. Now 37, she's finally determined to have a child on her own. But her plan is thrown a curve ball after she discovers she has only a million-to-one chance of getting pregnant.
Undaunted, the driven Kate allows South Philly working girl Angie Ostrowiski to become her unlikely surrogate.
Simple enough. After learning from the steely head of their surrogacy centre that Angie is pregnant, Kate goes into precision nesting mode: reading childcare books, baby-proofing the apartment and researching top pre-schools.
But the executive's well-organized strategy is turned upside down when her Baby Mama shows up at her doorstep with no place to live.
An unstoppable force meets an immovable object as structured Kate tries to turn vibrant Angie into the perfect expectant mum.
Alright with the cast that is lined up in this movie Baby Mama really should have been a laugh a minute and on that score it really was a disappointment. However the central performances from Fey and Poehler really are very good and the chemistry between the pair really is very visible.
The script is just uninspiring; woman can't get pregnant so hires a surrogate only for it to go wrong but miracles do happen in the end. And while there is nothing particularly wrong with that it just lacks originality.
It's widely recognised that most of the best comic roles go to men so in the case of Baby Mama it's great to see that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are getting a bite of the comedy cherry and they receive great support from Greg Kinnear and Dax Shepard.
Don't get me wrong there really are some laughs to be here, check out Steve Martin he really is a scene stealer, but it just falls short of expectations, especially from Fey who is really let down by the weak script.
Baby Mama is released on DVD 16th March
