In 19th Century Dublin, employment is scarce for women, forcing an impoverished young British girl to make a life changing decision to masquerade as a man in order to survive.
Some thirty years after donning men's clothing, Albert Nobbs is a quiet, unassuming butler with a secret, working at the Morrison’s Hotel.
Alone, with only her work colleagues as companions, she finds herself trapped in a prison of her own making until a chance meeting with another man concealing a secret opens her mind to the possibility that she doesn’t have to live as an outsider, helping her along the path to rediscovering her true identity.
Adapted from a short story by Irish author George Moore, the film has been a personal project for Close, 30 years in the making, after the actress originally played the role in the 1982 Off Broadway adaptation.
Directed by Rodrigo Garcia (In Treatment, Nine Lives) and with a screenplay adapted by Close and Man Booker prize winning novelist John Banville, Albert Nobbs is an endearing tale of one woman’s unconventional search to find her place in a life built upon a secret of her own making.
