Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter DVD

Starring: Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rufus Sewell

Director: Timur Bekmambetov

Rating: 2.5/5

We haven’t seen Timur Bekmambetov in the director’s chair for a while but now he is back with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - which is an interesting take on a moment in American history.

Spurred on by his desire to avenge the gruesome death of his mother, this white-knuckle adventure follows Lincoln (Walker) as he is thrust into an epic fight against vicious creatures threatening the future of the United States.

Aided by the mysterious Henry Sturges (Cooper) in his quest to rid the country of the undead, and in particular their diabolical leader Adam (Sewell).

Lincoln risks his presidency, his family and his life to protect America from an uprising of blood-thirsty vampires.

Unfortunately this beginning of this movie is a bit of a slow burner and the action doesn’t really get going until about halfway - which is a bit of a shame.

This is a movie that takes real historical events and puts a brand new spin on them but the main problem is it takes itself just a little bit too seriously.

There is not enough blood and guts and gore for my liking and it doesn’t really come close to being the funny and outrageous story that plots suggests that it might be - this is really its downfall.

It is not ludicrous enough and it is not outrageous enough and that is a real shame because this is a story that you could have had a lot of fun with.

The movie introduces us to Benjamin Walker as he takes on the role of Lincoln and he finds the right balance between paying homage to a historic leader as well as putting a new spin on the very idea of this President.

Abraham Lincoln has been turned into a bit of a bad ass action hero but again I would have liked to have seen this taken one step further.

Usually Timur Bekmambetov is a director who is not afraid to push the boat out being behind movies such as Daywatch and wanted but he never really hits top gear with this movie.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a great concept for a movie but it is a film that has failed to live up to its potential - this could have been an exciting, outrageous and funny movie from start to finish if the boundaries had pushed just a little further.
