From 2012, one of the nation’s most important cultural and religious icons will be revealed in a new light, as work progresses on York Minster Revealed, a five-year project generously supported by a £10.5 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
In one of the country’s largest conservation and restoration projects of its kind, cutting-edge science meets ancient craftsmanship to reveal the glory of York Minster’s East End, a masterpiece of stained-glass and stone, hailed as England’s ‘Sistine Chapel’.

New interactive galleries will reveal the astonishing secrets behind York Minster’s Great East Window.
Unprecedented in its time and still the largest stained-glass window in Europe, the window told the epic story of the ‘beginning and end of all things’.
Enter a private stained glass realm in the walk-in orb, explore the exquisite craftsmanship of the artists and also modern-day conservators, taking this once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the stained-glass and stonework at close range, before it is returned - fully conserved - to the heights of the Minster.
