Rob Delaney has been crowned the 'funniest person on twitter' and had huge success with the TV show Catastrophe in the UK alongside Sharon Horgan, which I am a huge fan of. I have to admit, I had very high expectations when I set foot in The Lowry last night at Salford to see Delaney's new offering- Meat.
He walked on stage and immediately had presence and the attention of everyone. There was no warming up needed- the audience already loved him before he said anything. His relaxed delivery and relatable subject matter meant that you felt in familiar company when he began.
For anyone who loves the humour in Catastrophe I urge to go and see this show as it's in the same vein- you laugh along but wonder- is it right of me to find this funny? But you're with like-minded people so no-one's judging.
I genuinely thought that because Delaney is from America that some of his jokes might go over my head, but his show fits in really well with a UK audience and although he makes references to America it's usually to poke fun at the country and the people.
Although it was only an hour, it certainly felt like we were there for double that. He manged to fit a lot of material into a short space of time- you do get a lot of bang for your buck with this comedian! He also didn't pick on the audience much, which was a great relief as with some acts you're waiting to be singled out.
The set is full to the brim with traditional comedy gold such as masturbation, raising family, holidays, sex, food, pooping, STIs, relationships; there are firm favourites in there that will make you ache with laughter. Delaney has a real talent for telling a story so you feel like you're there. His knack for spinning a good yarn will have you absorbed in whatever tale he decides to tell you.
When you go and see a comedian and you are used to seeing them as part of a two-some as I am seeing Delaney with Horgan, there is always the worry that you will prefer the collaboration over the individual. That is not true of Delaney, I enjoyed watching him alongside Horgan just as much as I did on his own.
I have always had two or three comedians whom I consider to be my absolute favourites and I thought no-one would ever rival them. After last night, I have to make room at the top of my list for Delaney as I would go back and see him again in a heartbeat.
