Sponsored by Aviva, NTL is the National Theatre’s ground-breaking project to broadcast the best of British theatre live from the London stage to cinemas across the UK and around the world by introducing cameras into the auditorium.
The project began in 2009 and has just reached over 1.2million. National Theatre Live is very much inspired by the Metropolitan Opera who pioneered this concept in 2006; however, the National was the first theatre company to do it. Whilst opera has a much longer tradition of being captured and transmitted in a recorded medium, theatre has tended to fare less successfully until now.
The video celebrates the millstone global audience figure of 1.2 million and features interviews with the head of digital and brains behind the concept David Sabel, an actor called Peter Egan, who appeared in the live broadcast of Alan Bennett’s ‘People’ last night at the National, and various vox pops from the audience who experienced a National Theatre Live broadcast in a cinema.
