As the weather gets colder, it is not just our wardrobe that goes through a change but also our skin. The cold weather can throw your skin off-kilter and can, in fact, leave the skin feeling drier and even more sensitive. Luckily, there are some steps you can take which will leave your skin not only glowing but also soft, supple and youthful this autumn/winter.
With a new plant-based range of products called Youth Series, the experts at leading skin care brand skinChemists, have pulled together some handy tips that will ensure your skin is winter ready in no time.
Invest in a more robust skin care routine
In the summer we tend to skip a complete skin care routine; hot weather and holidays mean a bit of moisturiser, followed by some SPF and you’re good to go. However, in the winter, as our skin becomes drier and more prone to redness, it can lead to dryness and flaky patches.
The good news about winter, however, is the clocks going back, meaning we get an extra hour, which means more time to invest in your skin care (yay).
In the colder months, just like you would with your clothes, layering is key. The team recommend starting with a good serum in the morning and an eye serum. The Collagen Facial Serum from the Youth Series range is devised from plant-based active ingredients, including white Lupin seeds and rich in Lupeol, Collageneer is an active molecule that increases the synthesis of Collagen I. Collagen protein makes up 75-80% of our skin, making it a huge role in the way we look and feel.
Once you have added a few drops of the serum to your skin and used a good eye serum, you then follow it up with a day moisturiser for extra hydration.
Don’t forget your skin care routine pre-bed as well, as winter skin needs more love. Once you have cleansed and toned your skin (don’t just use those makeup wipes, your skin needs a proper clean, especially if you’ve been wearing makeup in the day) then use a different serum in the evening, followed by a good night moisturiser. The Retinol Facial Serum is perfect for nighttime use, offering a dose of Retinol Complex, which is a well-known anti-ageing ingredient, to help reduce the appearance of aged skin by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
Hydration is key
Our skin needs more moisture in the winter, the cold can dry out the skin and it can feel less hydrated. Using products that contain Hyaluronic Acid is recommended. skinChemists source its Hyaluronic Acid from the fermentation of wheat peptones, making it a natural, yet powerful plant-based alternative.
Hyaluronic Acid is the ideal ingredient for the colder weather when our skin tends to become drier. It works by providing much-needed hydration to the skin. It holds water and help keeps it plump and hydrated.
The Youth Series Hyaluronic Acid range contains serums, masks, and creams, so something for everyone.
A must for a mask
We all need a little TLC when it’s colder and so does our skin, which is why a mask is a great addition to your skin care routine.
Use a mask 2 times a week, when your skin feels like it needs a little more love or when you feel like you need a pamper.
Masks are a great deep nourishing treatment that aims to revive and protect your skin. Quench thirsty skin by adding a mask to your routine and help maintain hydration in your skin, to leave it feeling soft and nourished with each use.
Don’t skip the SPF
Because it is winter, it doesn’t mean you should put away your sun cream. While there is less UVB around in winter, levels of UVA (or UV-Ageing as it is known in the dermatology world) are still significant enough to age our skin.
If you are using a vitamin C serum or skin care products that contain vitamin C then it is always a good idea to use an SPF, as when you combine vitamin c with a broad-spectrum sunscreen it has been shown to be more effective at neutralising free radical damage than sunscreen alone.
Watch the drink
It has been shown that alcohol can increase inflammation of the skin and also it has a dehydrating effect on the body in general, and as our skin can get more dehydrated in winter, alcohol can therefore make it worse. It is important to drink water to maintain general hydration, however in indulging at a festive party then make sure to up the water.
