Amber Heard opens up about dating, the pressure to look good and being too opinionated
Amber Heard hit the headlines again recently when it came out that she was dating one of the sexiest men on the planet, Johnny Depp but Amber Heard admits that having a relationship with someone in the same industry is tough.
“It is really hard when you spend your life living out of a suitcase. But it really does weed out superficial people – if someone is still with you after the second movie then they’re probably a good one! I like to trust people in general – it’s the southern girl in me.”
She with that expose came the inevitable paparazzi attention which to Amber is challenging:
“It’s hard because I was brought up to always be polite and respectful, when someone shouts your name – you turn around. It took me a very long time to overcome the cordial instinct, the polite, human instinct to smile and say thank you when someone compliments you, but then they get their picture, which is annoying.”
Demi Moore is one of her favourite actressWhat would she change about herself, it would be being less opinionated:
“I wish I could hold my tongue more, but I’m just not very good at it… [Angelina Jolie] is an incredible example – just an incredible force in terms of challenging the status quo. I think she talked about [being bisexual] honestly, which I love her for. Honesty is best – staying quiet can be so detrimental”
The pressures of Hollywood, having to always look good is a strain and in what is supposed to be the most equal society in the world she feels its tough as a woman to get decent roles.
“You name me movies where the woman’s part isn’t narrower than the man’s and they will be the exceptions – not the norm. I think in Europe things are better, but, in the US, we still have characters who are defined by physical attractiveness.”
“I try to search for roles where the character is not dependent on how she looks, but it is hard because I didn’t know anyone in this industry so I started as an extra and fought. I’ve had to take on roles that were superficial, girlfriend roles, but I’ve tried to put some power or strength into them. And I don’t think talent and beauty are mutually exclusive. It’s a shame that someone like Charlize Theron has to put on a bunch of weight and fake teeth to be seen as a talented actress.”

“My short attention span is what got me into acting – without it I may have been happy to follow a schedule or a more normal trajectory. But, instead, at around the age of 16, I veered off into this!...I didn’t think of it as something I could ever do – it was just something I knew could break the ennui I felt growing up in Texas.”
“People are often content to live close to where they were born, and I respect that, but, from an early age, I was NOT that person. I felt like I wanted to be anywhere but there and I’m still a bit like that now. I’m in the perfect profession to satiate that need because I live a sort of vagabond lifestyle as an actress. I need constant change, constant stimulus.”

“I’ve always worked with cool people – both men and women. Harrison Ford in Paranoia was a legend. Liam Hemsworth is such a talent – he will work forever. Demi Moore was one of my favourites – so genuinely benevolent. I learnt so much from her.”
As for her favourite thing to do, nothing makes her happier than a good crossword:
“My favourite thing is to do crossword puzzles. I do the New York Times one every morning. Then I go to the barn to see my horse.”
