The 'former 'Hollyoaks' actress has joined the cast of the CW series, with the third season set to explain what happened to the character, who was written out of the show when Ruby Rose quit after just one season.

Alongside a news report about her casting, Wallis wrote on Instagram: "Super excited to finally announce I’m joining the cast of 'Batwoman'.

"I’m sure you can imagine how much this means to me and how incredible it’s been working on the show so far.

"It’s a huge responsibility stepping into the shoes of a character that’s already been established and it’s a journey I’m looking forward to being a part of and hoping you guys do too," Day wrote in her caption. "Everyone’s made me feel so welcome and it’s amazing being back home with my DC family."

During the first season of the show, Kate - the cousin of Bruce Wayne/ Batman - became the vigilante Batwoman in Gotham City, but the character ended the run of episodes missing, presumed dead, after a plane crash.

The second season saw Javicia Leslie be the first Black actress to play Batwoman on screen after her character, Ryan Wilder, found the famous suit within the wreckage of the plane crash.

Javicia recently admitted she was "really proud" of the way the show stepped up after Ruby decided to quit.

She said in January: “We worked really hard to come back from what I think people thought would break us. I'm really proud of our team for making magic."

Ruby's shock decision to step down after just one series stemmed from a back injury she received during filming.

She previously explained: "Being the lead of a superhero show is tough. Being the lead in anything is tough. But I think, in that particular instance, it was a lot more difficult because I was still recovering from my surgery. I had my surgery and then 10 days later I went to work, which maybe wasn't the best idea. Most people take about a month or three off before they return to work."
