The 36-year-old actor stars as former SAS black ops officer Captain James Conrad in 'Kong: Skull Island' - the upcoming reboot of the popular creature movie franchise - and has said he believes people's interest in movies involving mythical creatures such as the titular colossal ape comes from a love of things "we don't fully understand".

He said: "I think the reason those myths exist is that human beings enjoy feeling there are mysteries that we don't fully understand.

"I'm a great admirer of nature documentaries, like those presented by David Attenborough. I always learn something new about some extraordinary creature on the planet that I didn't know about, so I think all those myths play into the fascination we have with the natural world."

And Tom found being a part of the movie "thrilling", as he can't remember a time when he wasn't aware of the famous mythical ape.

He added: "It's so thrilling. I remember when I was younger the image of King Kong on top of the Empire State Building with the light planes flying towards him. I don't ever remember not knowing that image, in a way."

King Kong first appeared on the big screen over 80 years ago in the eponymously titled movie 'King Kong' - which was released in 1933 - and Tom believes the longevity of the franchise comes from an "internal clash" within humanity.

He told the Belfast Telegraph newspaper: "Kong embodies the internal clash between our civilised selves and the place in our consciousness that still has a very real sense of something bigger than ourselves."
