Thomas Cohen "refused to become a traumatised, grief-stricken single father".
Although the 25-year-old musician was devastated to lose his wife Peaches Geldof to an accidental heroin overdose in 2014, he is determined to be happy for the sake of their two young children Astala and Phaedra.
He said: "Firstly, at the time, I was 23. I had two children who needed to be taken care of and, in maybe early June 2014, I started to do that, and we're now here in 2016. I just made the decision to start looking after myself and I refused to lose myself and become a traumatised, grief-stricken single father who everyone's going to look at and think and feel all of these things about. And that's absolutely fine. However, by this stage, if somebody looks at me like that, then it's just a projection."
While Thomas - who is currently dating Daisy Lowe - has grieved for his wife, he doesn't want to be in mourning forever.
He explained to the Sunday Times Magazine: "I got to a stage where I thought, 'I don't want to stay in this place any more.' I'm not dissociating, hiding myself or escaping the reality of the situation. However, I'm not staying based in that trauma.
"It's a lot to do with nourishing yourself with the care and love of other people - and seeing that that light was never not there."
Thomas' debut solo album 'Bloom Forever' will be released on May 6.
