Steve Carell says he will not encourage an acting career for his children until they are older.
Carell has two children, Elizabeth, 13 and John, 10 with his wife Nancy, but admits that he has no desire to see his kids on the big screen while they are young.
However, should his children want to follow in his footsteps when they are older, he says that he would support their decision.
Speaking to Graham Norton on BBC Radio 2, the actor said: "I would not as children, I don't want them to have jobs at this age, it's not for them, it's not in their DNA right now.
"I wouldn't discourage them from acting and I'd love them to do school plays and pursue it if they want it to.
"Vaguely interested, my daughter just got a part in the school play and is excited but in terms of a professional career, that's for later on. 18, if they want to be actors."
Carell kicked off his career back in the mid eighties, which has seen him work in comedy, TV and film.
Carell will be back on the big screen at the beginning of next year with his new film Foxcatcher.
Foxcatcher has been whipping up a storm on the festival circuit since it had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
Carell's central performance has the critics raving and the film is expected to be a major Oscar contender come the beginning of next year.
Carell is currently on Freeheld alongside Ellen Page, Julianne Moore, and director Peter Sollett.
