In today’s Social Buzz, there are plenty of celebrity news stories to keep you entertained! From the stage invader who attacked comedian Dave Chappelle on stage at a live Netflix event, to Gary Neville mocking himself on Twitter after an incredible comeback by Liverpool in their Champions League match against Villarreal, there’s a lot of gossip to get through…
Dave Chappelle attacked at Netflix comedy event
The comedian Dave Chappelle isn’t known for watching his words. Performing at the Hollywood Bowl as part of a live Netflix comedy event, the comic was rushed by a stage invader who attempted to tackle him to the ground.
Chappelle fell backwards and was left in shock, but he and his team are said to have been able to keep the invader at arm’s length after the initial tackle. Some reports claim that the attacker had been armed with a gun and a knife, and that he had to be treated for an injury to his arm.
Whilst surprising, the attack on Chappelle may be explained due to his telling of jokes that have been deemed by many as transphobic in nature. Protests have been held outside Netflix's headquarters over comedy specials fronted by the comedian on the streaming platform.
Depp v Heard will continue after motion to strike denied
The judge presiding over Johnny Depp’s trial against Amber Heard yesterday (May 3rd, 2022) decided that there was sufficient evidence for the trial to continue, after Heard’s defence argued that the case should be dismissed following Depp’s team wrapping up their closing arguments.
This is a move that any team acting on behalf of the defence would have made. The fact that it failed will mean, however, that Heard’s defence team now will call their own witnesses to the stand, in an attempt to discredit Depp’s character.
Their first was psychologist Dr Dawn Hughes, who testified that Depp “kicked” Heard “in the back” due to his alleged jealousy over her working with actor James Franco. Dr Hughes also dismissed the previous claim that the couple was responsible for "mutual abuse", which their marriage counsellor testified to earlier on in the trial.
Gary Neville mocks himself after Liverpool claw back win over Villarreal
As Liverpool faced an uphill battle, 2-0 down at half-time during their clash in the European semi-final against Villarreal, Gary Neville posted a cheeky video of himself enjoying a red wine to his Twitter account. He was clearly enjoying the trouble the British team were facing.
After what we imagine was a firm speaking to from manager Jurgen Klopp at half-time, Liverpool would come back onto the pitch with a win on their mind. Fabinho, Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane would all score, allowing them a 5-3 aggregate win.
Neville returned to Twitter after the result, mocking himself by posting another picture with red wine but this time, looking a little down-trodden.
Anne Robinson quits Countdown
After just a year of fronting the show, Anne Robinson has stepped down as the host of Countdown. She was the first woman to take the role and despite saying she had a "blast", she thinks it's time for "an older woman to take the reins".
She joked: “I hope too I've encouraged TV bosses to realise that not all women at the wrong end of their 70s are in care homes playing bingo and watching conjuring tricks.”
Exactly who will replace Robinson remains to be seen, but fans are pointing to Richard Osman as an obvious choice. After announcing he would be leaving Pointless after 13 years, Osman may just be gearing up to take on the gig. He’s certainly smart enough!
Britain’s Got Talent star left paralysed
Back in 2019, Britain's Got Talent played host to a daredevil called Jonathan Goodwin, who quickly became a favourite with audiences of the show. Last year however, a stunt he was attempting to perform went terribly wrong.
Goodwin planned to escape from a straitjacket, whilst hung upside down between two suspended cars, 30 feet in the air. The cars released prematurely, crushing Goodwin between them.
His partner, who he's engaged to marry, Amanda Abbington, spoke to the podcast Out to Lunch with Jay Rayner about the tragedy.
She explained: “He fell 30 feet and lost a kidney, broke both shoulder blades, shattered both legs, third degree burns, broke his spine and severed his spinal cord and nearly died. And then on the operating table, he nearly died again.”
“He’s paralysed now, he’s in a wheelchair. Unless there’s a kind of stem cell surgery or that thing that Elon Musk is designing with the little chip, he’ll be like that forever.”
Abbington added that he was like “liquid sunshine”, remaining positive despite the accident. The couple plan on tying the knot this summer.
