The ‘Rocketman’ singer, 76, has had a lifelong devotion to Watford FC and became the club’s chairman in 1976, and its ex-manager Dave ‘Harry’ Bassett revealed his dismissal on the ‘Cosh’ podcast.
He said: “Elton said, ‘Harry, you see that cushion beside you? We’re gonna have a game with that’.
“It’s like a dice. He goes, ‘Come on, Harry, one to five, you get the sack.’
“I said, ‘What if I get a six?’
“He said, You have another throw.’”
Asked what happened after the dice game, Bassett said: “We got (drunk) and I went home at four in the morning – sacked.”
Sir Elton recently praised the decision to rename a road after his iconic 1973 album as he visited it for the first time since the change.
The street runs along the side of Watford FC’s stadium Vicarage Road, and was originally called Occupation Road.
But a group of fans called The 1881 Movement petitioned the council to rename the road in homage to Sir Elton and it was finally made official last week.
The street has been changed to Yellow Brick Road, in tribute to the singer’s ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ album, with new yellow signs erected to mark the official name change, with the singer proudly visiting the spot earlier this month.
Sir Elton has taken on the title of Watford FC’s Honorary Life President and has a stand named after himself in the ground of Vicarage Road, where he has said he “fell in love” with football as a child.
He added about the renamed road: “Using Yellow Brick Road is a really fantastic, clever way for supporters to have played their part in recognising a time when I was here pretty much every day – on this amazing journey with (ex-Watford manager) Graham Taylor.”
