The 54-year-old soprano had planned to head off to the International Space Station on September 1, but in a post on her website Sarah confirmed she was postponing the adventure for "personal family reasons".

Eric Anderson from Space Adventures - the company that organised Sarah's ten-day trip - said: "Since 2012, Sarah has shared her story of a lifelong dream to fly to space. Her international fame as the world's best-selling soprano has enabled her message to circle the globe, inspiring others to pursue their own dreams.

"We've seen firsthand her dedication to every aspect of her spaceflight training and to date, has passed all of her training and medical tests. We applaud her determination and we'll continue to support her as she pursues a future spaceflight opportunity."

In March, Sarah revealed that her ex-husband Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber had written a song for her to sing in space.

Sarah - who was married to the composer from 1984 until 1990 - said: "I've been working on something with my ex-husband, Andrew Lloyd Webber and he's thought of the most beautiful line for something so we're just taking it slowly at the moment. Because of the complexities of this, I don't want to promise too much because there is a reality to all this."
