The 23-year-old actress - who plays the titular role of a high school senior in the Greta Gerwig-directed film - has claimed that the movie has struck a particular chord with young people and that's why it's become such a success.

Speaking on the red carpet at the BAFTA Awards in London on Sunday night (18.02.18) - where Saoirse has been nominated in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category - she said: "It's the best reaction you could hope for.

"When anyone wants to go and see a film, read a book, you do kind of just want to see a bit of yourself in it, even if it's set in Sacramento and you're from the UK, I think there's that human sentiment of wanting to belong, finding your way, and that's something everyone can relate to."

Saoirse received a particularly warm welcome from the young fans in attendance at the Royal Albert Hall.

And the actress admitted she's been delighted to see how they have embraced the movie.

She told the BBC: "All the young people who are out tonight who love the film is great."

Saoirse recently revealed she was drawn to playing the role of Lady Bird because she considered her to be an "unusual" kind of female lead.

She shared: "Lady Bird is very much her own person. She doesn't follow the pack. She's very driven, she has a very strong sense of self.

"One of the things that's unusual for female leads, especially in a film about a teenager, is that she believes in herself, you know?

"Even if she doesn't know what she wants to be or what it is she wants to say, she knows she's going to do something. She's very committed to being herself."
