Ryan Reynolds' mother Tammy Reynolds is still thrilled her son received the title from People magazine in 2010 and she boasts to strangers about Ryan's handsome achievement.
In an interview with the latest Spanish issue of Glamour magazine, he said: "I think those things are invented to please mothers. In every conversation my mum says that I'm the sexiest man ever and the worst thing is that she tells everyone in the street. I try to convince her it's silly."
The 26-year-old year-old actor beat stiff competition from Robert Pattinson and Ian Somerhalder, who were also on the list that year, but the actor takes a more cynical stance about the publication's annual honour than his mother.
He explained: "It's an illusion created to sell magazines and movies."
Despite his superstar status, Ryan - who married actress Blake Lively last September - still forgets he's famous and is sometimes surprised when people approach him on the street.
He said: "In my house I forget that I'm famous. When I go out and people recognise me is when I remember. I try to live in my little strange world, far from it.
"What attracts me to this industry, particularly during the last seven years, is the creativity of the projects. I think I have the best job in the world and for a second I take lightly, but after spending time doing what you like you forget the impact it has, how a film can take your face to any corner of the world. That scares me."
