The 39-year-old met the church leader in the lobby of Sirius XM radio and says the experience "felt like something".

He said: "I ran into a priest and a nun in the corridor. Never miss an opportunity for a blessing from someone who's dedicated their life to the lord.

"I got blessed and it felt like something."

Russell was recording an interview with the station's Ron Bennington, in which he put forth his ideas for a modern society and said "altruism, meditation, reflection and transcendence" will save us from a "sugarcoated culture" in which we're eating bad food and "listening to bad ideas all the time."

He added in the interview, which will air on October 24: "I want a society where the people that are poorest and most vulnerable are taken care of.

"People that are ordinary and working get a decent life. And the economic elite, that currently are on some edifice of irreproachability, on some plinth of inaccessibility, contribute to our society."

The actor and comedian then criticised businessman Donald Trump as "a bit daft".

He said: "It didn't seem like he knew much [other than capitalism].

"It's not like he's a person who's a super guy or anything. He's just good at hungry hippo, and we live in hungry hippo land."
