Rosamund Pike wants her sons’ unconventional names to teach them “independence”.
The 42-year-old actress has Solo, eight, and six-year-old Atom with partner Robie Uniacke and she admitted the couple chose monikers for their children that had “strength” and symbolise characteristics that she values.
She said: “Names should have strength. These names signal independence and independence is something that I value. That is all.”
The ‘I Care A Lot’ actress thinks she and her partner are “risk-takers” and she loves Robie’s attitude to life.
She said: “He is a man of many gifts. If there is an edge to life, he will be on it — probably the bleeding edge rather than the cutting edge.”
The family are currently living in Prague and Rosamund drives her children to school in a Ural, a 1946 Russian army-issue motorcycle and sidecar.
She said: “We first discovered these bikes in China, and when we came here we thought it would be a fun thing to have. It even comes with its own axe!”
Meanwhile, as part of her research for ‘A Private War’ – in which she played celebrated war reporter Marie Colvin – Rosamund walked through a field of landmines and although she was “terrified”, the experience gave her freedom.
She told Sunday Times Style magazine: “I knew that I couldn’t go out to a war zone with a war correspondent, so I went to work with a landmine charity in Lebanon.
“I was frightened of going, I have two small children. I was thinking, ‘Why am I doing this?’ I was in tears of conflict.
“I just put one foot in front of the other, even though I was terrified. I’ve always had a belief that freedom comes through a certain lack of fear, and that great experiences come when you conquer your fears, so I always push myself out of my comfort zone.”
