Richard Gere has split from his girlfriend of six months, Padma Lakshmi.

The pair called time on their romance because their respective careers are keeping them too busy.

Speaking to the New York Post newspaper's Page Six column, a source said: "They decided they would be better as friends."

Richard has been busy filming in New York new movie Time Out Of Mind, where he's playing a homeless man.

Last week he joked about his experience filming: "What probably really helped was I was right in the middle of a divorce, so the emotions were right on the surface."

Padma however has been filming over the summer in Boston, and then decided to spend some time travelling.
