Reese Witherspoon says her ‘Legally Blonde’ character has “inspired” her to “always be an advocate” for herself and others.
The 44-year-old actress starred in the 2001 movie as law student Elle Woods, and has now admitted the iconic character has been an inspiration to her in later life, as she praised her for having a “true sense of self”.
Speaking during the virtual reunion of the movie’s cast - which Reese held on her Hello Sunshine YouTube channel on Tuesday (21.10.20) - she said: “Of all the movies that I’ve made, there is one that comes up more than any other, and that is ‘Legally Blonde’. I think it’s because of Elle Woods. I think she just inspired people to believe in themselves. She just has a true sense of herself and she always wants to see the best in others. She’s inspired me to really keep an open mind, and always be an advocate for myself, and for other people in this world. I think her spirit is something we could all use a little bit more of right now.”
Reese held the online get-together this week with her former co-stars - including Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Ali Larter, Jennifer Coolidge, Holland Taylor, Jessica Cauffiel, and Alanna Ubach - in partnership with the charity World Central Kitchen, in order to help “shine a light” on the non-profit’s tireless work amid the coronavirus pandemic.
She added: “We decided, after almost 20 years, it was time to have a reunion. Because we love each other, and we wanted to share the joy we had making this film with all of you.
“But first, we wanted to take a moment to shine a light on a wonderful organisation that’s been doing so much good right now - World Central Kitchen - a non-profit that works to provide food relief around the US. In response to COVID-19, World Central Kitchen has visited dozens of American cities to distribute fresh meals to frontline workers and communities in need. You can visit wck.org to support this wonderful organisation.”
During the reunion, Reese became emotional as she recalled that filming the beloved comedy movie was the equivalent of her college experience, as she dropped out of attending higher education as a teenager in order to pursue an acting career.
