Puff Daddy was awarded an honorary doctorate from Howard University in Washington today (10.05.14).

The rapper, real name Sean Combs, told the crowd: "Ain't no homecoming like a Howard homecoming", after he studied business at the university for two years before dropping out in 1990 to further his career in music.

According to Billboard, he went on to tell the crowd: "Howard University didn't just change my life - it entered my soul, my heart, my being and my spirit."

The Bad Boy Records founder, who has changed his nickname back from P Diddy, received his honorary degree in humanities and was recognised alongside CNN news anchor Wolf Blitzer, surgeon Clive Callender, jazz saxophonist Benny Golson and PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi at the ceremony.

The 44-year-old star was asked to give a commencement speech for other students and also posted a number of excited tweets and snaps on Instagram.

Along with a photograph of him and his mother, he wrote: "Pulling up to one of the most important moments of My Life with the LoVe of My Life #MamaCombs #DiddySpeechHU. (sic)"

The rapper received a standing ovation after his speech and classmates chanted "Diddy" after which he tweeted: "I am Humbled & Honored!!! (sic)"
