Peter Jackson says that technology is a key part in bringing The Hobbit movies to the big screen, even though he struggles with it himself.

Despite developing software to bring characters and battle scenes to life in his new film The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies - which is the third and final instalment of The Hobbit trilogy - he says that he doesn’t even do email.

However, even though The Hobbit trilogy has been a visual and technological treat, the director reveals that the technology that is used in the film is always driven by the need to tell the story.

Speaking at the London press conference for the latest film, Jackson said: "Once we knew we were doing the Tolkien movies, we had to create battle scenes and we had to write software. We had to create characters and creatures that didn't exist, so the technology is always driven by the needs of the story you're telling.

"If 17 years ago, instead of doing 'The Lord of the Rings', I was doing a drama in a fish and chip shop, then we wouldn't have developed this technology. Well, unless we wanted a cod to jump around on a bench or something!

"I mean, I can't even do an email! I'm an absolute idiot at computers, but fortunately we have wonderful, wonderful artists that do it."

The Battle of the Five Armies is the first time that we have seen Jackson in the director’s chair since the success of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug twelve months ago. This movie will be the sixth and final time that we get to explore Middle Earth with this Oscar winning director.

The Battle of the Five Armies comes over a decade since we were introduced to Middle Earth on the big screen for the first time with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - both trilogies have enjoyed both critical and commercial success.

The Battle of the Five Armies is set to be the biggest instalment of the trilogy to date and sees Martin Freeman back in the central role of Bilbo Baggins. He is joined on the cast list by Ian McKellan, Orlando Bloom, Luke Evans, Richard Armitage, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is released 12th December.
