The 44-year-old actor broke his back when he fell out of a window over 20 years ago and he still suffers other lasting health problems as a result, including an urgent need to urinate.
He said: “At 20, I fell from a fourth-floor window and broke my back. For four days they said I’d never walk again, but I had a miraculous recovery…
“Since breaking my back I have a problem with my prostate, so I pee a lot, sometimes in nature.”
The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor is still gripped by crippling stage fright and he believes it stems from being laughed at by the audience when he scratched his butt on stage in front of everyone as a child.
He said: “When I was four, I was on stage, dressed as a monkey. I turned around so I wasn’t facing the audience and scratched my bottom, which obviously brought the house down. It mortified me. That probably gave me stage fright, which I’ve been living with since.”
Despite his years of success, Orlando – who has children Flynn, 10, with ex-wife Miranda Kerr, and Daisy Dove, seven months, with fiancée Katy Perry – was at his happiest when he was still able to go about his life anonymously before finding widespread fame.
He told Guardian Weekend magazine: “[I was happiest] when I was about to embark on filming ‘The Lord Of The Rings’, prior to any kind of fame or notoriety, full of hope and dreams, and excitement of the adventures ahead.”
However, he wouldn’t want to change anything about his life now.
Asked where he’d most like to be right now, he said: “Right here: present to my experience of my life.”
