One Direction's hiatus will last two years.
Although it was initially believed that the quartet, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Liam Payne, would only take a year off, Liam has revealed that it will be longer.
Speaking to BBC Radio 1 DJ Greg James about his plans for song writing during his time off, Liam said: "Obviously we're all going to take a break for a bit first and then consider where we are in the world.
"Then I just want to write songs. That's been the most fun process out of this, except for touring, the writing of the songs.
"We're going to come back, so there's something to write for as well, for us and for other people.
"We haven't really had time to write an album. Writing's not really a job, it's so much fun.
"We've always had to rush it, so it's going to be nice for the next two years - I'm going to write a few songs and see what happens."
Liam previously said the band are looking forward to finally having the chance to properly celebrate their achievements.
He explained: "We have so much to celebrate, the great work our fans have done and how hard we've worked over the years.
"We haven't really stopped to think or look at all the different things we've achieved.
"You get told different things all the time but you kind of forget, which is sad. I want to sit down and go, 'Woah, what just happened?'"
