One Direction have dominated the top 10 most retweeted tweets of the year with four entries.

Harry Styles beat off competition from his fellow band members and the rest of the world to score 2015's most popular tweet, which earned more than 726,000 retweets.

The 21-year-old star simply wrote: "All the love as always. H (sic)"

Harry pipped his former bandmate Zayn Malik, who was second, to the crown by nearly 100,000 tweets.

Zayn's runner-up message, which managed 566,000 retweets, was one of praise for his ex-band members.

He tweeted: "Proud of my boys the new single is sick.

Big love. :) x (sic)"

One Direction had the bronze medal spot with Liam Payne's tweet on 1D's five-year anniversary, which received more than 496,000 retweets.

He wrote: "Wowwwww 5 years 5 boys what an amazing journey I couldn't thank you all ever enough and thank you Louis Niall Harry and zayn for everything (sic)"

US President Barack Obama broke the 1D monopoly with his tweet of support for the Supreme Court's decision to legalise gay marriage in America getting over 448,000 retweets.

His message read: "Today is a big step in our march toward equality. Gay and lesbian couples now have the right to marry, just like anyone else. #LoveWins (sic)"

But One Direction were back on the scene in fifth place with Louis Tomlinson's message of appreciation to their fans managing more than 413,000 tweets.

Kanye West, Caitlyn Jenner, 1D's Niall Horan and 'Star Trek' actor Leonard Nimoy also made the top 10 .
