Neil Patrick Harris has issued a public appeal for "funny" writers to come forward and help him with material for next year's Oscars.

The actor will host the ceremony and though he's "thankful" for the job, he doesn't yet know what is going to happen during the show.

Speaking to Access Hollywood he explained: "I legitimately have no idea what the content of the show will be yet.

"I'm just thankful that I get to be a part of it this year.

"We are actively hiring writers so if you know anyone funny, Tweet me."

Neil previously admitted he hopes to keep the Oscars "classy", next year taking place on February 22 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

"I don't want them to be super derivative of other shows that I've done. I don't want it to seem like I'm doing the same award hosting gig that I did on the Tonys, just now on a different stage...

"I want to also just make sure that it's a classy event. I've always loved the Oscars and have great respect for its history, and the gowns, and the classiness of it."
