Miley Cyrus felt she had "freedom" to act however she wanted at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), and always knew it would be a pivotal moment in her reinvention.

The 'Wrecking Ball' hitmaker hit headlines for her controversial stage show, which saw her gyrating up against Robin Thicke and making inappropriate gestures with a foam finger and told Britney Spears it was part of her plan to creates a new and unique image for herself.

During an interview recorded prior to the VMAs, Miley told the Britney: "Right now I'm at a point in my career where I can be exactly who I want to be, what I want to be.

"I have this freedom to do whatever I want because I'm starting as a new artist now. Every time I do anything I want to remember this is what separates me from everybody else."

Over the past few weeks Miley has been promoting her new album 'Bangerz' in Europe while her ex-fiance, Liam Hemsworth, has reportedly moved out of the Toluca Lake, California, home they shared.

The Hollywood hunk has reportedly wanted to announce their break-up for months and is now planning to go back to his native Australia for some space.

A source told Life & Style magazine: "Liam had been begging Miley to announce the split all summer.

"[Liam] told Miley he is actually thinking of moving back to Australia for a while."
