Miley Cyrus claims she made history like Madonna and Britney Spears with her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).
The 'We Can't Stop' singer made a provocative appearance at the event in New York City last month wearing a skin coloured latex bikini and 'twerking' up to Robin Thicke while sticking her tongue out and posing suggestively with a foam hand, but despite provoking outrage she claims the performance will go down as a pivotal moment in the event's history.
In an interview with MTV, she said: "I don't pay attention to the negative because I have seen this play out. How many times have we seen this play out in pop music?
"You know now ... you know what's happened. Madonna's done it, Britney's done it. Every VMA performance, anyone that performs ... That's what you are looking for.
"You want to make history. Me and Robin, the whole time, said, 'You know you are about to make history right now?' "
Madonna and Britney caused controversy when they kissed during their appearance at the awards show in 2003.
Miley, 20, insists people who have criticised her are "over-thinking" the performance, which saw her segue from singing her track 'We Can't Stop' to Robin's raunchy mega-hit 'Blurred Lines'.
She added: "They're over-thinking it. You're thinking more about it than when I did it. Like I didn't even think about it because that is just me."
Former Disney star Miley is currently re-inventing herself from pop princess into an adult artist and reportedly went to the studio straight after the VMAs with rapper Kanye West to work on a remix.
