Matthew McConaughey is considering running for Governor of Texas.
The Oscar-winning actor revealed his political ambition while discussing his current role as a professor at the University of Texas, admitting that making a bid for office in the state of his birth could be part of his long-term plans.
The 51-year-old star - who teaches a class on filmmaking at the university - told 'The Balanced Voice' podcast: "I’m looking into now, what is my leadership role? Because I do think I have some things to teach and share.
"What is my role, what is my category in my next chapter of life that I’m going into now?"
Greg Abbott, the current Governor of Texas, is up for re-election in 2022, and Matthew hinted he could make a run for the post.
Asked if it could become his next goal, Matthew replied: "It’s a true consideration."
Matthew also hinted he'd like to run for political office last year.
However, the 'Dallas Buyers Club' star was waiting for US politics to redefine its "purpose" before he committed to doing anything.
Asked if he'll ever run for political office, Matthew replied: "I don’t know. I mean, that wouldn’t be up to me. It would be up to the people more than it would me.
"Look, politics seems to be a broken business to me right now and when politics redefines its purpose, I could be a hell of a lot more interested."
The Hollywood star called on Republicans and Democrats to "get behind personal values to rebind our social contracts with each other as Americans".
Matthew observed that the country "doesn’t trust each other".
He added: "That leads to us not trust in ourselves, which if that becomes epidemic, then we’ve got anarchy.
"I’m all for the individual, and I think it’s for - to make collective change that the individual needs to look in the mirror and say, ‘How can I be a little bit better today?'"
