Matt Healy gets "worked up" thinking about his mother's struggle with postnatal depression.

The 1975 frontman is incredibly close to his TV star mum Denise Welch and gets upset when he thinks about her struggles when he was born, especially after she admitted the lengths she went to in order to "try and love" him.

In an interview with Q magazine, he said: "When I was about 17 and my mum still drank, and we were at the house and we'd all had a drink and started talking about stuff.

"She got really, really upset and she said to me, 'Do you know that when you were one and a half, for two months I would come into your room every night and lie down on the floor while you were asleep and try and love you?'

"Now, the reason why that resonated with me so much was because me and my mum are so close - we say, 'I love you' in every phone call, because we know that there's a chance it could go ... It gets me a bit worked up."

Matt - whose father is 'Benidorm' actor Tim Healy - penned a track called 'She Lays Down' about his mother's life-long struggles with depression on the band's second album 'I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It'.

The 26-year-old musician admits it is "vicious" watching someone you love battle with the mental illness.

He shared: "I'm very precious about words and concepts like depression. Because when you see it, it's really vicious. It's so real. It's as real as lesions on your face."
