The 77-year-old singer has cleared out her home and sent some of her most treasured possessions to be auctioned off at Sotheby’s in London this week with lots including handwritten lyrics, a script for Sofia Coppola’s movie 'Marie Antoinette', designer clothes and artworks - and Marianne is adamant she just doesn't want to feel defined by material things.

She told The Independent newspaper: "I’ve always enjoyed a life of the mind. My home is in my head, I carry it with me. I am my home.

"I enjoy nice things and always have, but they don’t define me, and these days I get more joy from the garden where I’m living than anything else. It’s time for them to find new owners that I hope will cherish them as much as I once did."

The lots also include Marianne's acoustic guitar, a drawing by Anita Pallenberg, an expired passport as well as Chanel clothing and an Yves Saint Laurent Tuxedo jacket.

Marianne said of her clothing: "Clothes have always been very important. To feel exquisitely dressed allowed me to become 'Marianne Faithfull', to feel ready. I’ve known so many of the great designers and they were all necessary in helping me create the 'fabulous beast' – my public persona."

The auction features memorabilia from across the music industry including a handwritten set list by Sir Mick Jagger and lyrics scrawled by Jimi Hendrix, signed Beatles merchandise, guitars used by Oasis star Noel Gallagher and a grand piano from Abbey Road Studios' famed studio three which had reached a bid of £150,000 by Wednesday (11.09.24).

The online auction closes at 2pm on Thursday September 12.
