The basketball star has been recovering in hospital after he was found unconscious following a drink and drug binge at a Nevada brothel and doctors have reportedly warned his estranged wife Khloé Kardashian that if he ever takes drugs again, the damage would be "irreversible".
A source said: "The doctors have already told Khloé that if he ever did drugs again, the damage it would do his brain will be irreversible. This is his chance to finally quit drugs all together and start a new life, and everyone is just hoping he will."
The insider also revealed the 35-year-old sportsman is currently being treated as a brain trauma victim but insists it will be a long road ahead as they won't be able to tell the "extent of the damage" for a while yet.
They told Entertainment Tonight: "It wasn't just one small stroke, it was a series of strokes. They won't know the extent of the damage for a few months. They need time for the brain swelling to go down.
"He can speak, yes, but he's not having conversations. He's not operating like he was before this. Depending on the extent of the damage, [he may need to] learn how to do certain motor skills again."
