The 'Born This Way' singer performed her Academy Award-nominated song 'Til It Happens to You', from the rape documentary 'The Hunting Ground', and shortly afterwards the 'Tik Tok' hitmaker - who a court ruled can't leave her exclusive recording contract with Dr. Luke, despite her claims she was sexually abused by the producer - thanked Gaga for speaking out and said it was "very close to [her] heart".

Taking to her Twitter account after the emotional performance, she wrote: "thank u @ladygaga and VP @joebiden for bringing attention to sexual assault at the oscars. it hit very close to my heart for obvious reasons (sic)"

As soon as the pop superstar - who has spoken out a number of times about Kesha's plight - finished her performance at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, floods of stars took to Twitter to praise her for the moving tribute.

Tyra Banks said: "You continue to give me chills @ladygaga. #Oscars My love goes out to all who have been sexually assaulted. #NotYourFault (sic)"

And actress Lindsay Lohan added: "@ladygaga beautiful performance #survivetogether #prayforchildren (sic)"

Meanwhile, singer Demi Lovato said: "If this song wins my heart won't be able to take it (sic)"

Despite the outpouring of support for Gaga and 'Til It Happens To You', the Best Original Song Oscar went to Jimmy Napes and Sam Smith for 'Writing's On the Wall' from 'Spectre'.

Before the 29-year-old singer took to the stage, US Vice President Joe Biden encouraged attendees to pledge on the website ItsOnUs.org in support of victims of abuse.

He said: "Take the pledge. A pledge that says I will intervene in situations when consent has not or cannot be given. Let's change the culture. We must and we can change the culture so that no abused woman or man like the survivors you will see tonight ever have to ask themselves 'what did I do?' They did nothing wrong. I really mean this."

Ahead of the Oscars, Gaga vowed to "stand by" Kesha right to the very end of her fight because like everyone she "deserves" to be "Happy".

Hours before the star-studded ceremony in Los Angeles, Gaga wrote: "@kesharose I'll be thinking of you 2nite. This is not over we'll stand by u until you are free to live a HAPPY life. Everyone deserves that (sic)"
