The 71-year-old singer was rushed to UCLA Medical Centre late last month after being found unconscious at her nearby home, and though her official diagnosis has still not been revealed, a statement has dismissed reports the star is unresponsive in a coma.

A posting on her official website read: "Contrary to rumors circulating on the Internet today, Joni is not in a coma. Joni is still in the hospital - but she comprehends, she's alert, and she has her full senses. A full recovery is expected."

Rumours the 'Big Yellow Taxi' hitmaker's condition was more serious than previously disclosed were sparked after TMZ discovered Joni's close friend Leslie Morris had filed court documents seeking a conservatorship to make decisions about her pal's welfare but the statement stressed it was a measure put in place so the singer gets the best possible help when she is discharged from hospital.

The post continued: "The document obtained by a certain media outlet simply gives her longtime friend Leslie Morris the authority - in the absence of 24-hour doctor care - to make care decisions for Joni once she leaves the hospital.

"As we all know, Joni is a strong-willed woman and is nowhere near giving up the fight."

A statement posted on Joni's website earlier this month suggested she was getting "stronger" every day, while an earlier message revealed that the 'A Case Of You' hitmaker - who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 - was in intensive care, but awake.

It read: "She is currently in intensive care undergoing tests and is awake and in good spirits. More updates to come as we hear them.

"Light a candle and sing a song, let's all send good wishes her way. (sic)"

Joni previously revealed she suffers from Morgellons Disease, a mysterious condition that includes lesions and irritable fibres underneath the skin, and admitted six decades of smoking had "robbed" her of her voice.
