The 71-year-old singer's close friend Leslie Morris has allegedly filed court documents seeking a conservatorship to make decisions about the legendary singer's welfare because she is unresponsive and "so impaired as to be incapable of being assessed."

Leslie, who has been friends with the 'Big Yellow Taxi' hitmaker for 44 years, claims Joni previously told her she had no close relatives that could take on the role, according to gossip website TMZ.com.

A source also told Billboard.com: "It's very serious."

The singer was rushed to UCLA Medical Centre late last month after being found unconscious at her nearby home, but her official diagnosis has still not been revealed.

A statement posted on Joni's website earlier this month suggested she was getting "stronger" every day.

It read: "Joni remains under observation in the hospital and is resting comfortably.

"We are encouraged by her progress and she continues to improve and get stronger each day (sic)."

An earlier statement revealed that the 'A Case Of You' hitmaker - who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 - was in intensive care, but awake.

It read: "She is currently in intensive care undergoing tests and is awake and in good spirits. More updates to come as we hear them.

"Light a candle and sing a song, let's all send good wishes her way. (sic)"

Joni previously revealed she suffers from Morgellons Disease, a mysterious condition that includes lesions and irritable fibers underneath the skin, and admitted six decades of smoking had "robbed me of my voice."
