After clips were shown of his work, he told the audience at Paramount Studios theatre in Los Angeles: "This is a great honour, but glancing up at the screen I realise what a ridiculous thing I've done.

The 50-year-old actor received the first-ever Distinguished Artisan award at the ceremony on Saturday (15.02.14) thanks to his appearance-altering roles in movies such as 'Edward Scissorhands', 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and joked about how "ridiculous" he has looked over the years.

"I mean seriously, why do they still give me jobs? I've done a lot of things...I should probably apologise for a few, but I won't."

The 'Lone Ranger' star went on to say how much he liked having his face moulded in 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'.

He said:"I found, oddly, that I liked being encased in all of that stuff. I try something different each time as an actor with the amazing help of make-up artists who have made my whole career."

Among those also recognised at the awards - which returned after a 10-year hiatus - were the hair and make-up teams from 'Dallas Buyers Club', 'Behind the Candelabra', 'The Walking Dead', 'American Hustle' and 'Breaking Bad'.
