John Mayer and Katy Perry's differences make them work as a couple.

The 35-year-old singer admitted the fact he isn't as famous as his on/off girlfriend means their relationship has the right balance.

He told Rolling Stone magazine: "The fact that we're on such different sides of the coin actually keeps a lot of conflict at bay.

"She's a whole different vibration of what's going on, and I'm totally supportive. I can say, 'Hey, how was work?' and really wonder how work was. It's a nice existence."

The star - who released new album 'Paradise Valley' earlier this month - insisted shunning "fame" has made him happier as a musician because he isn't trying to write the next hit single.

He said: "How great is it to not have to think in terms of ubiquity? That s**t was hard, man!

"I didn't have any fun when I was trying to keep [my fame] elevated. It's almost impossible. It's Sisyphean. Now, playing shows is all the fame I need."

Meanwhile Katy has recently revealed she has to take time every morning to meditate and make sure she has "absolute rest" at least once a day.

She previously explained: "I start the day with transcendental meditation. It puts me in the best mood.

"I wake up and just prop myself up in bed for 20 minutes. It's the only time my mind gets absolute rest.

"When I'm asleep, my subconscious mind is switched on and, when I'm awake, I'm alert."
