John Cleese says that he didn't really want to marry third wife Alyce Eichelberger and did 'cave in.'
Cleese married for the third time back in 1992, but the union ended in divorce in 2008, where Eichelberger received £12 million in the settlement.
And now Cleese has revealed that marriage wasn't something that he was really thinking about or wanted at the time.
Speaking to the Sunday Mirror newspaper, he said: "It's finally finished. Now I can start my life again. I can go off on holiday for the new year and draw a line under it.
"Life is full of ups and downs, of course, but there are only a couple of things I regret. I did rather cave in and agree to marry Alyce when I didn't really want to. And that cost me a fortune.
"It cost me the best part of 10 years of my life too. I do regret the time spent over the last 10 years just earning money to hand over to someone else. Now it has come to an end."
Cleese has since married his fourth wife, jewellery designer and former model, Jennifer Wade - who aged 43, is 32 years his junior - who he says is definitely the right person for him.
He continued: "I've finally got it right. I'm so lucky to have found love at this stage in my life. It's infinitely better than winning an Oscar or anything like that, or making £10 million, because that's where happiness really lies."
Despite having three failed marriages, John still believes tying the knot is an important move, which he is glad to have taken with his new lover.
He added: "Marriage is absolutely something I would recommend. I think to get a proper, loving relationship at this stage in my life is the biggest bonus I could have got.
"Now I can earn a bit of money for this wife. And maybe at some point for myself too!"
