Joely Richardson had a period when work "dried up" due to her age.
The 59-year-old actress - who is known for her role as Julia McNamara in the FX drama series 'Nip/Tuck' - has admitted it wasn't a "smart move" to do theatre, because when she wanted to come back to a screen career, no one knew how to cast her.
She told Radio Times magazine: "It's a career I've had to work at. After the Nip/Tuck years [US TV series], I wanted to do theatre. It wasn't an obvious or smart career move - but I wanted to do it. Then, when I got older, no one knew how to cast me. I wasn't getting through the door. There was no place for me in my new age group."
However, more work started to come in after she portrayed Mrs Bolton in the 2022 romantic period drama 'Lady Chatterley's Lover'.
Asked if it was because of her age and being a woman, she replied: "It was partly that. Being cast as Mrs Bolton in Lady Chatterley's Lover [in 2022], weirdly, really helped me. It felt very full circle - having played Lady Chatterley herself [in 1993] when I was younger. It made doors open. I got to play the young ones when I was young, the middle-aged ones when I was middle-aged, and now that I'm on the other side of that and I get to play these characters."
