James Brolin has no plans to retire.
The Emmy-winning actor, set to turn 84 in July, will wrap up his role as the narrator for the third and final season of Netflix’s ‘Sweet Tooth’ on June 6, but says he won’t be slowing down and loves the movie business.
He was quoted by People saying: “After all these years, I feel like what’s really exciting is your next idea.
“Film is like the old bread. It’s half price the next day. It’s what’s next that’s exciting.”
James’ six decades in showbiz has seen him tackle a huge range of roles, from the medical drama ‘Marcus Welby, M.D.’ to the TV sitcom ‘Life in Pieces’. But ‘Sweet Tooth’ marked his first voiceover role.
He said about landing the job: “I had done probably 40 sample voice auditions and never got one.”
His break with ‘Sweet Tooth’ came as his friend Robert Downey Jr and his wife Susan who executive produced the project, put his name forward as the show’s narrator.
He added: “It was Robert Downey and Susan said, ‘We want Jim.’
“I had lunch with him one day and within several weeks they called and said, ‘We want Jim only. Make a deal with him, Warner Brothers. Make a deal with him, Netflix.’
“I thought that everything they seem to put their hands on has a really good chance.”
James also said he still can’t get enough of the film industry, adding: “I just love being on a set.”
He added about his wife Barbra Streisand, 82, to whom he’s been married for more than 25 years: “I call my wife quality and I’m quantity. She’s done 19 movies, and I’ve done 97 movies alone and 600 hours of television.”
James’ will soon be filming his next project, Netflix’s ‘Ransom Canyon’ – a contemporary Western also featuring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly – that the actor describes as the next ‘Yellowstone’.
He said: “I don’t plan on stopping work at any time. I tell everybody, ‘You're invited to my 110thbirthday. Don’t be late.’”
