Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank has revealed that she felt like an 'outsider' at school because of her humble background.

Swank has gone on to be a two time Oscar nominee and Hollywood star, but her trailer park upbringing left her to feel out of place during her time at school.

The actress found solace in the movies that she watched because many of the characters were going what she was going through.

Speaking to Vulture, she said: "I think we've all felt like an outsider at some point in our lives, and for me, especially as a child, I felt the pressure of classism.

"I would be embarrassed for living in a trailer park, and I would watch movies and see characters that were feeling things that I felt I was experiencing.

"I felt understood through those movies, and they became my friends, in a way, and I think the power of movies is astounding in that way."

And Hilary began to feel "uncomfortable" as a teenager when she started getting attention for the way she looked.

She said: "I know that when I became a teenager and all of a sudden was looked at differently, it was very uncomfortable.

"I immediately put on overalls and started wearing wool socks because I didn't want to be looked at like that."

Swank is returning to the big screen this week with her new movie The Homesman alongside star and director Tommy Lee Jones.

Swank has been winning over critics and audiences with her central performance, and is being tipped as an outsider for a possible Best Actress Oscar nomination.
